Yalda Hakim, born 1984 in Afghanistan, is an Australian journalist currently working for BBC World News. Hakim came to Australia in the 1980s after her father smuggled his young family on horseback from Afghanistan into Pakistan to escape the Soviet invasion. After 2½ years in Pakistan, the family arrived in Australia in 1987, when Hakim was 3 years old.
